A Private Yacht for the Day? Yes Please!

Updated: Jul 23, 2024

My friends Frank and Gym who were vacationing in Dubrovnik, invited me to spend a day with them aboard the private 51 foot “Joker III” Cabin Cruiser.

We were welcomed aboard by Captain Joseph,

plus his handsome crew, Patrick, and Maro.

Our instructions? Sit back, relax, and get ready for a boating adventure of a lifetime –cruising around the beautiful Elaphiti Islands.

Watching the shimmering turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea, feeling the warm sun and wonderful sea breeze, I couldn’t help but relax.

The Elaphiti Islands are a hidden gem in the Adriatic Sea, consisting of a cluster of several islands, each with its own unique charm and beauty. Departing from Dubrovnik harbor we set sail towards the islands of Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan, each offering a different perspective of the enchanting Dalmatian coast.

As we cruised along the crystal-clear waters, we were treated to breathtaking views of rugged cliffs, lush pine forests, and secluded coves perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Captain Joseph has been boating in the Adriatic since childhood so he showed us the best spots to anchor in secret coves we had to ourselves.

As for yacht life, Patrick and Maro took care of our every need, from serving champagne and other beverages to sharing stories about the islands and their history. While I sipped on a chilled glass of local wine, I just gazed at the stunning views of the old stone villages on the cliffs.

Unfortunately, we didn’t see any fish when snorkeling. Interesting fact--the sea has been unseasonably warm this year and so fish swim very deep where the water is cooler.

My highlight of the day came when I saw dolphins playing in the water. During my four consecutive summers in Croatia, this is my first dolphin sighting. It really made the day extra special.

Our lunch was served at Dubrovnik Restaurant, a lovely seaside restaurant on the island of Lapud. This restaurant featured freshly caught seafood and traditional Croatian dishes.

Our appetizer was seriously a seafood-lovers dream of sashimi octopus and swordfish. There was also shrimp and lobster soaked in olive oil and lemon, tuna tartar, and an octopus salad with onions and capers. This was my first time eating octopus. I can’t believe I’ve never tried it before--- it was so good!

For our main course we were served Red Scorpion Fish—fresh from the sea, brought out on a tray before grilling. For a moment I thought, “what am I doing?” None of us had tried this white fish before, but it was absolutely delicious.

After lunch, Captain Joseph showed us another “secret” cove, where we jumped into the azure sea, floating and frolicking in the clear waters—not a care in the world.

Finally it was time to head back to shore and I just felt tremendous gratitude—a gorgeous day aboard a private yacht in paradise. Feeling the gentle sway of the boat, the sound of the waves, and the ocean breeze, I know I am truly blessed.

Thank you Joseph, Patrick, and Maro for making it a great day with lasting memories and thank you Frank for including me on this glorious adventure.
