One of my favorite volunteering opportunities in the desert is Modernism Week. I love this event because it gives me a chance to visit some of the beautiful, iconic homes that I see on my daily walks around Palm Springs. I volunteered for several home tours this year which entailed greeting guests, showing them around the property, and offering architectural trivia when available.
Modernism Week is a celebration of mid-century modern design, architecture, art, fashion, and culture. This annual 11 day festival features over 350 events, including home tours, walking tours, double-decker bus tours, nightly parties, garden tours, vintage car shows and interesting and informative lectures. I have met people from all over the world who travel to Palm Springs for this event. There are over 30 different neighborhoods included in this festival, each holding their own unique style of architectural design.
I highly recommend this fun event which happens every February and encourage you to buy your tickets as soon as they go on sale, usually late November. Events sell out fast. I also suggest volunteering which is a great way to participate.
I would also like to note that Modernism Week is a charitable organization. It offers scholarships to students pursuing college degrees in the field of architecture and design and also to the preservation of modernist architecture in the state of California.
